Embark on a spiritual odyssey as we explore the early religious landmarks of Cairo. Our journey begins with a visit to the El Muallaqa Church, a basilica dating back to the late fourth and early fifth centuries. Perched atop the south gate of the Fortress of Babylon, this church, known as “suspended or hanging,” holds a storied history. Despite destruction in a ninth-century earthquake, it remained a focal point of the Coptic Church of Egypt until the 14th century.

Next, we’ll pause at the Ben Ezra Synagogue, constructed between the sixth and ninth centuries AD. Housing a rich Jewish Heritage Library, the synagogue holds invaluable documents shedding light on Jewish life under Arab rule and inter-sect relations.

After a delightful lunch at a local eatery (Abu Shakra), our journey continues to Memphis, established circa 3,100 BC as the legendary city of Menes, the unifier of Upper and Lower Egypt. Initially serving as a strategic fortress under Menes’ reign, Memphis evolved into a flourishing city by the Third Dynasty, as evidenced by the architectural marvels unearthed at Saqqara.

Our final stop takes us to the Sakkara site, a vital section of the Memphis necropolis housing the tombs of kings from the 1st and 2nd Dynasties.   • Day 4: Aug 1 – Cairo Exploration tour (National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Citadel of Salah Eldeen, Khan Al-Khalili Market, Old Cairo)

Begin your day with an immersive journey into Egypt’s rich cultural tapestry. Our first stop is the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), a pioneering institution boasting 50,000 artifacts tracing the evolution of civilization from its inception to the present day.

Following a delightful lunch at one of Cairo’s finest restaurants, our exploration continues with a visit to the historic Citadel of Mohamed Ali. Perched atop the Muqattam Hills, this fortress, built in 1183, offers commanding views of the city. Marvel at the majestic domes and minarets, including the iconic Alabaster Mosque, whose dazzling interior captivates with twinkling lights and intricate mosaics.

Conclude our Cairo tour with a leisurely stroll through the bustling Khan Al-Khalili Market, one of Egypt’s oldest and most renowned markets.   • Day 5: Aug 2: Witness the Total Solar Eclipse

In the early morning, arrive at Cairo International Airport to board the flight to Luxor. Upon landing you are going to view the total solar eclipse; Prepare for a celestial spectacle of unparalleled grandeur as we gather to witness the total solar eclipse, a breathtaking phenomenon that promises to captivate and awe.

Commencing at 11:33 AM on Monday, August 2, 2027, the eclipse reaches its maximum magnificence at 12:55 PM, with a staggering magnitude of 0.947, before concluding at 2:16 PM.

Then, proceed to the luxurious Nile Cruise, where you will spend the next four nights sailing from Luxor to Aswan.

  • Day: 6 Aug 03 – Luxor West Bank Tour, Optional Hot Air Balloon Ride

As the sun rises over Luxor, we offer an optional tour to experience a breathtaking hot air balloon flight.

Breakfast will be served on the Nile Cruise. Afterward, explore the Luxor West Bank necropolis, including the Valley of the Kings, where you’ll visit the remarkable tombs of Rameses V & VI, and the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, an architectural marvel.

The final stop of the day will be the Colossi of Memnon, the imposing statues that are the sole remnants of Amenhotep III’s temple on the west bank of Thebes.

Return to the Nile Cruise for lunch and enjoy the tranquility of the Nile in the evening.

Day: 7 Aug 04 – Edfu, Kom Ombo, Sail to Aswan

In the early morning, we will set sail for Edfu, where you’ll visit the impressive Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon god Horus. Afterward, continue to the Temple of Kom Ombo, a unique double temple dedicated to both Sobek and Horus.

Continue sailing towards Aswan overnight, enjoying the serene views along the Nile.

Day 8: Aug 05 – Aswan City Tour

After breakfast, visit the impressive Aswan High Dam and the beautiful Philae Temple, located on an island in the Nile.

Enjoy a relaxing felucca ride on the Nile, sailing around the lush Botanical Garden before returning to the Nile Cruise for the night.

In the evening, you may choose to attend the optional Sound and Light show.

Egypt is very safe to visit and the police, tourist police, and army are in prominence wherever you go, giving you a feel of being in secure surroundings. Egypt prides itself on its high safety record for tourists and will do all it can to maintain this.

Egyptian Arabic is the official and most widely spoken language in Egypt, which is considered by many Arabic speakers as the easiest and most outgoing Arabic dialect. English is taught in schools and is considered a secondary language that is most commonly used for almost any job or certificate and OfCourse tourism purposes.

The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and upscale shops. There are also ATMs available at hotels and outside major banks dispensing local currency.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Egypt would be during the winter months, from October to April. The temperatures are mild and pleasant, although evenings can become quite cool. December through January are the peak tourist months so expect large crowds if travelling at this time. The best time to enjoy the beaches, without having to endure the large crowds of summer tourists, would be from March to May. Temperatures at this time are warm and tourist sites are not too crowded. however in case of a unique event like the Egypt solar eclipse, it is preferred to start the tour before the date set for the total solar eclipse.

Egypt, being a predominantly Muslim country, is naturally conservative (not like the Gulf States or Saudi Arabia) but the average people are careful in what they wear. The dress code in Egypt for women is considered conservative by western standards and it is respectful to obey this code. For men it is not really an issue — normal trousers and shirt or T-shirt are fine — but in Cairo it would not be acceptable to wear short shorts or a tank tops/sleeveless top. In the resorts like Sharm El Sheik, Hurghada, Sinai, etc. — shorts are fine, and it is very open and flexible. This also applies to ladies for the beach areas, but going into the market area in Hurghada, for example you may be more comfortable in trousers. Generally, for men in Cairo or any city that is not on the seaside, remain with trousers (at tourist sites long loose shorts) or jeans and T-shirt, as even in Cairo, local people do not feel comfortable seeing a man in shorts. In Seaside areas it’s ok to walk in shorts, but once you enter a local restaurant or market, it’s better to be more covered.

For the vast majority of travelers to Egypt, a valid passport and a travel visa is required. A visa can easily be purchased at the airport when you arrive. The cost for a single-entry, 30-day tourist visa is $25 (or equivalent in Euro), must be paid in cash (no credit or debit cards accepted), and your passport must be valid for at least six months. Citizens of all European countries, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Macedonia, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine and United States can obtain a visa upon arrival. (Egypt does allow visa-free access for certain countries such as Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Lebanon, Macao, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia.) Visas can also be purchased beforehand through Egypt’s Visa e-Portal: https://visa2egypt.gov.eg. Forty-one different nationalities are eligible to purchase the e-visa, however, it’s far easier to simply buy the visa at the airport.

As with most European and North American countries, tipping is graciously accepted in Egypt. A 10% tip at restaurants and to guides and drivers is standard. Unfortunately, at major tourist sites like the Pyramids of Giza or the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, touts aggressively hustle for tips by allowing you to take photos in areas where it’s clearly posted as prohibited (such as inside the tombs). Please refrain from perpetuating this problem by not paying to take pictures.

Egypt has a voltage supply of 220V, and the plugs are the 2-round pin type that are common throughout Europe.

As noted previously, Egypt is a Muslim country, therefore alcohol is not readily available outside of tourist areas and western-style hotels/resorts. Beer and wine is available for purchase on all Dragonfly Kite Safaris.
